Morning’s 62 months already ran. This is Friday’s unused health-care sentence.
U.S. Department of Justice, Friday Oct. 9: Mark Loftis, 39, of Cushing, Oklahoma, a chiropractor and medical-supply owner, was sentenced yesterday to 14 years in prison. The office said he and co-conspirators submitted more than $30 million in false claims to Medicare, TRICARE, and CHAMPVA for orthotic braces, continuous glucose monitors, and other durable medical equipment beneficiaries did not want or need. The three programs paid more than $8 million. After a 12-day jury trial ending in July 2026, he was convicted of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud. He was also ordered to pay more than $8 million in restitution and to forfeit more than $560,000. 14 years is not Ramirez’s 62 months. $30 million billed is not Nodus’s $23.6 million.
Same DOJ file: Loftis did not disclose to Medicare the ownership and management of Back Pain Home Supplies LLC, doing business as EZ Medical Supply. The office said he paid more than $1 million in illegal kickbacks, including through a shell marketing company, to marketers, purported telemedicine companies, and a call center that persuaded elderly and disabled people to give up personal information. Telemedicine doctors and nurse practitioners generated sham orders without examining, and often without speaking to, the beneficiaries. One example in the paper: eight braces for a single beneficiary. FBI Tampa prosecuted the investigation with HHS-OIG, DCIS, and VA-OIG. A jury verdict plus a sentence is not a case still waiting on a plea. Monday’s Barron and Iley already ran. We will not reprint 160 months or seven years 10 months as first-day news.
What this means for you
If you needed this morning’s unused crime, it still stands as Ramirez, 62 months, Nodus. If you needed noon’s unused sentence, it is Loftis, 14 years, $30 million claimed, $8 million paid, after a jury. If the week is too heavy, 988.
Bottom line: 14 years. $30 million in claims. $8 million paid. Not Ramirez 62. Not a charge still pending.
