Southern California does not get the hurricane. It gets the weekend the hurricane leaves behind.
Hurricane Marie stays well off Mexico. The National Weather Service says the closest the core gets to Los Angeles is about 800 miles. You do not cancel Disneyland. You do change how you treat the water.
The Labor Day setup
Forecasters have a 6- to 8-foot south swell, strong rip currents, and high surf from the holiday weekend into early next week. Higher tides start Saturday and peak Monday and Tuesday, topping 7 feet.
That swell plus evening high tide is why NWS flagged an “increasing chance of moderate coastal flooding” in low spots: Avalon, the Alamitos Peninsula in Long Beach, Malibu, and Point Mugu.
Humidity returns to 35–50%. Coast temps sit in the mid-80s. Rain, if it arrives Sunday, is up to a quarter-inch. Thunderstorm odds are 5 to 10%. Rose Schoenfeld at NWS Oxnard’s message was the useful one: swim where there is a lifeguard, and if your picnic cannot take a sprinkle, have a backup.
Hurricanes Karina and Marie are both feeding the swell. Sneaker waves — the ones that climb a jetty when you thought you were fine — are on the board. Stay off the rocks.

The Atlantic is quiet. Hawaii is watching Hurricane Lowell turn north early next week. California’s risk is not a landfalling storm. It is hundreds of thousands of people walking onto a south-facing beach on a record-priced tank of gas and treating an 800-mile hurricane like a rumor.
Edouard already punched Texas. Marie punches the Pacific shoreline with water that does not care that the storm never makes landfall.
What this means for you
If you are going to the water from San Diego through Ventura, pick a guarded beach. Tell kids the jetty is closed. If you live in those named flood pockets, move the car tonight, not when the tide is already in the lot.
Bottom line: Marie will not hit California. The swell will. The rip current does not need a landfall to ruin a holiday.
