This morning we told you 8:30 a.m. Eastern could undo Thursday. It did.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics said U.S. employers added 162,000 jobs in August. The Street had been living around 55,000–56,000. Unemployment held at 4.1%. Average hourly earnings rose 0.3% on the month to $37.75, up 3.1% from a year ago.
That is the “soft landing that still lets the Fed hike” cocktail. Not the “give disinflation a chance” cocktail Governor Christopher Waller poured on Thursday.
The three numbers, scored
Payrolls: 162,000. That crushed every estimate in the usual surveys. It is also a reversal of the summer mood after July originally printed −23,000.
Unemployment: still 4.1%, about 7 million people. The jobless rate did not fall because the labor force grew. Participation ticked from 61.4% to 61.6%. More people showed up. Hiring still ran ahead of them.
Wages: +0.3% month, +3.1% year. In line to a hair hot. Soft hiring plus hot pay would have been messy. This is strong hiring plus still-firm pay. That is the hike fuel.
The revision that matters as much as the headline
BLS revised July from a 23,000 loss into a 21,000 gain. June went from +20,000 to +31,000. The “jobless summer” just got a quieter math lesson. Two months of “the labor market cracked” are now “the first print was noisy.”
ADP’s +38,000 private number on Wednesday was a hint. Friday was the test. They did not rhyme.
What the machines did
Bitcoin dumped back under $80,000. Two-year yields jumped. The dollar firmed. Stocks opened muted — not a crash, not a party. Hike odds for September 15–16 climbed back toward the mid-60s in the first pass of the tape.
Waller already said this print would not change his labor picture much. He is waiting on inflation. Markets heard 162k anyway.
What this means for you
If you are job-hunting, 162k is not 2021. It is also not July’s scare. If you have a mortgage quote in the mid-4s, do not assume Thursday’s speech locked the rate. CPI on September 11 can still save the pause. This report made the pause earn it.
Bottom line: the labor market showed up. The pause trade has to show up next week.
