David Fischer, Associated Press / The Independent, Monday: former Haitian government official Joseph Badio and more than a dozen others appeared in Miami federal court on charges related to the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moรฏse. Badio, a former Ministry of Justice employee, was brought in a wheelchair. The hearing came a day after he and 17 others described as Colombian mercenaries were flown from Haiti, where they had been in custody. U.S. Magistrate Judge Lisette Reid assigned lawyers and set additional dates in a series of brief dialogues with each of the 18 defendants. An appearance is not a conviction.

Haitiโs Ministry of Justice said it surrendered the suspects โto allow for their trial.โ Four South Florida men were convicted in May in a related plot, Reuters said. At least nine have been convicted at trial or by plea, AP said. Those verdicts are not tonightโs 18.
Planning and financing, prosecutors have alleged, ran through Florida, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti. An allegation is not a map we will invent beyond what the papers said. Defendants are presumed innocent.
