The outage map caught up with the wind.
Kauai Island Utility Cooperative, via Civil Beat Tuesday morning: most of the island is dark โ roughly nine in 10 households. About 3,000 customers in Koloa and Eleele still have power, KIUC member-services manager Beth Amaro said. That is the leftover, not the recovery.
Amaro: restoration today is โunlikelyโ for anybody. Not impossible. Unlikely. โWe have to inspect, we have to repair, before we can restore.โ A mainland drone team got in over the weekend. Crews waited on sunrise. By end of day she hoped to say whether this is days or weeks. She did not have that sentence yet.
Kauai Emergency Management chief Elton Ushio told KHON2 it was a โvery, very busy night.โ The incident command โlit up like a Christmas tree.โ Helicopters go up once the sky is legal. Do not invent a damage total from a porch photo.
Tens of thousands on Oahu are out too, per the Hawaiian Electric map. Check yours. Do not call KIUC just to report that the lights died โ the system already knows. Downed lines: assume they are hot. 911 if it is a hazard. KIUC: 808-246-4300.
Roads, Tuesday morning, Kauai County: Kuhio Highway near the Hanalei Bridge. Kaumualii Highway in Kekaha between Kala and Akialoa. Maluhia Road. Five refuges still listed: Kilauea Neighborhood Center, Kapaa Middle, Kauai High gym, Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, Waimea Canyon Middle.
Lihue Airport is still the Monday close. Schools and offices on Oahu and Kauai stay dark Tuesday. That package did not expire because the center moved north.
What this means for you
If you are on Kauai, stay off the roads unless you have to move. If you have a generator, carbon monoxide is the quiet killer. If you are waiting on a flight, the airline. If a line is down in the yard, do not be the hero.
Bottom line: nine in ten. Three thousand still on. Unlikely today. The map is the update, not a cousin.
