General Assembly for around 40 minutes, their first face-to-face. Two prior phone calls already existed. Reuters, William James: Burnham set out the Falklands line. “The clear position is: we will stand firm in the face of any threats. We will defend the right of the Falkland Islanders to self-determination and to remain British.” He said he wanted Trump to hear it directly, and that the president “very much understood.” A statement is not a U.S. policy change. Trump had said in August he was reviewing Washington’s neutral position. We will not invent a new U.S. line.
BBC: Trump again called the Chagos Islands agreement a “terrible” deal and said Diego Garcia is “strategically very important,” including for operations related to Iran. He said he thinks the prime minister “is going to be looking at” the deal. Burnham: “Yep.” Looking is not a repeal. We will not type a canceled lease.
