AP, Michelle L. Price, updated 11:57 a.m. ET Friday: China’s Xi Jinping said he expects to meet President Donald Trump two more times this year. Xi invited Trump and first lady Melania Trump to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen in November, and noted they could meet again a month later at the G20 at Trump National Doral in Miami. Xi: “We do welcome Mr. President and the first lady to visit China.” Trump: “We will, and we’ll be speaking a lot.” An invite is not a joint text. Two more rooms are not a year-long deal.
AP: the three-day visit has been “heavy on pomp and light on substance,” with no major breakthroughs on trade or the safety of artificial intelligence. Friday began with tea in the White House during China’s Mid-Autumn Festival. Thursday’s closed-door sit ran 90 minutes; the Chinese readout named the Middle East, Ukraine, and the Korean Peninsula. The White House has not provided its own readout of that room. Morning already filed the East Room and the eagle.
