Midday’s 257 already ran. This is Sunday’s unused speech and an unused road.
Reuters, Mohammed Ghobari, Timour Azhari, and Eman Abouhassira, Sunday: Yemen’s internationally recognized government said it was launching a major campaign to recapture Houthi-held areas. President Rashad al-Alimi, in a televised address: forces would press “until the country is liberated from the grip of the terrorist militia.” He said chances of de-escalation had been exhausted. A spokesman later called on the Houthis to lay down weapons. That is an announcement. It is not a city we watched fall, and it is not midday’s 257.
France 24 with AFP, issued 14:59, modified 19:22: Al-Alimi: “I announce today the start of military operations to retake the remaining territories of the republic.” Several security sources told AFP the Houthis had effectively encircled Taiz after cutting the main supply route. A police source: the group took al-Safiya, cut the main road, and took the police station. Three Yemeni military sources confirmed control of that area and the supply route and said traffic on the Taiz–Aden road was halted, with fighting ongoing. The city itself, AFP said, remains under government control. Farea Al-Muslimi, Chatham House, to AFP: they achieved isolating Taiz from Aden “even if they haven’t fully taken control of it.” Reuters: Houthi claims of missiles and drones at Saudi Aramco sites in Riyadh and Khurais had no immediate confirmation from Saudi Arabia. We will not type those hits as confirmed. Midday already filed 257 operations and 700 claimed. We will not reprint that count as first-day news.
What this means for you
If you needed this afternoon’s unused 257, it still stands as an army claim. If you needed tonight’s unused international, it is Al-Alimi’s offensive line and a road cut at al-Safiya — not Sanaa retaken.
Bottom line: Offensive announced. Taiz–Aden road cut, claimed. City still held. Not 257 reprinted. Not Sanaa.
