Oil got the headline. Healthcare got the bruise.
Investing.com after the close: losses in Healthcare, Consumer Services, and Financials led the tape lower. Amgen fell 10.08%, or $44.06, to $393.17. Stryker fell 8.81%, or $26.70, to $276.43 β a 52-week low. Howmet Aerospace dropped 10.70% to $231.53. Salesforce β3.86% to $249.22. Home Depot β2.29% to $313.70.
That is why the Dow β1.17% looked worse than the S&P β0.58% and the Nasdaq β0.32%. Old names and hospital names took the bid that energy and a couple of chip names would not give back. Chevron still closed +0.67%. UnitedHealth +0.93%. Not every healthcare ticker used the same door.
We are not going to invent a guidance cut or a trial readout that is not on this close story. The number is the number. PPI Thursday. CPI Friday. Those prints talk to the whole tape, including the sleeve that just ate 10%.
What this means for you
If you hold AMGN or SYK, Tuesday was a gap, not a thesis you have to write tonight. If you hold an index, you felt it through the Dow more than the Nasdaq. If you do not hold them, you can skip the autopsy. Not investment advice.
Bottom line: Amgen β10. Stryker to a 52-week low. Healthcare helped the Dow to 52,788. Oil was the other half.
