Thursday’s unused Ghostbusters already ran. This is Friday’s unused charging paper. An indictment is not a conviction.
Department of Justice, Friday: James Thomas Ashbacher, 37, of Spring Lake, North Carolina, a former U.S. government contractor, was arrested by the FBI on Tuesday. DOJ: the indictment was unsealed Tuesday. He is charged with unlawfully transmitting and retaining national defense information and with theft of government property. Those are charges. They are not findings. All defendants presumed innocent. Thursday already filed unused five in Operation Ghostbusters. We will not reprint five, 40, or $750,000 as first-day news. We will not reprint Wednesday’s unused Faruqui strike. We will not reprint Monday’s unused 48. We will not reprint Sunday’s unused Lucas.
Same unused indictment, according to DOJ: beginning in or about 2021, he worked for a private company providing security and emergency-management services at the U.S. Army Special Operations Command facility at Fort Bragg. He held a Top Secret clearance with SCI access. DOJ: he photographed and removed videos and photographs of classified military operations without authorization and transmitted them to a social-media site. Other users later re-posted the materials to a second site. In a private message he asked a user to remove some of it and said he was “trying to do some damage control.” A search of his residence, DOJ said, found a classified award write-up with additional national defense information, and a night-vision goggle system specific to a unit inside Army Special Operations Command that had been reported missing. Those are allegations in a charging paper. They are not a verdict. FBI Charlotte is investigating, with Army CID. Eastern District of North Carolina and the National Security Division are prosecuting.
Same unused caution: Thursday leftover 18 more charged in North Carolina with illegally voting in 2024 is not this unused contractor paper. 18 is not Monday’s unused 48. Do not smash 18 into 48. Oct. 23 leftover Brinksman, another contractor charged with transmitting national defense information, is not this unused Ashbacher file. We will not smash two contractors into one. We will not invent a conviction. Nov. 3 is still the election. Charges are not convictions.
What this means for you
If you needed Thursday’s unused crime, it still stands as five charged, not convicted. If you needed this noon’s unused paper, it is a former Fort Bragg contractor charged, not convicted. If the week is too heavy, 988.
Bottom line: Charged. Not convicted. Not Ghostbusters reprinted. Not 48 reprinted.
