ABC7 Chicago / Chicago Sun-Times, Jon Seidel / Associated Press: Assistant U.S. Attorney Sheri Mecklenburg retired effective Thursday, writing to Northern District of Illinois U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros that “this is not a voluntary departure” and that she was retiring “under protest.” She said she had become “a convenient target to be scapegoated and publicly vilified.” In a three-page letter obtained by the Sun-Times, she alleged Boutros laid “responsibility at my feet for a felony prosecution that you personally directed over my objection that the case was better suited to misdemeanor charges.” The Justice Department denied that claim, AP said. The Broadview Six case — six people charged with conspiring to impede an officer at a Broadview ICE facility — was dismissed in May. Defense lawyers accused Mecklenburg of vouching to the grand jury. U.S. District Judge April M. Perry is scheduled to hear arguments Oct. 1 on possible sanctions. We will not invent that hearing.
Same filings: Mecklenburg’s lawyers said Boutros’s office threatened discipline or firing if she intervened. She retired so she could ask to appear as an independent party.
