U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Friday, Sept. 18: ICE officers arrested Helda Araceli Mendez-Merida, described as an illegal alien from Guatemala, on Sept. 3 during a targeted immigration enforcement operation in Indianapolis. DHS says she unlawfully voted in a national election in Indiana. The release does not name the election, the ballot, or a criminal case number. Fox News: officials said it was not clear which election. We will not invent one.
DHS: Mendez-Merida entered through Arizona in September 2015, was arrested by the U.S. Border Patrol, and was then released. A Department of Justice immigration judge issued a final order of removal on Sept. 3, 2019. A removal order is an immigration judgment. It is not a criminal conviction for voting. Secretary Markwayne Mullin: โThis illegal alien will be deported so she can never again poison our elections.โ A secretaryโs quote is not a boarding pass. ICE Enforcement Division Acting Assistant Director Patricia Hyde: voting โis reserved exclusively for U.S. citizens.โ That is the statuteโs line. It is not a verdict in this file.
WTHI, Sept. 18, 6:07 p.m. ET: she is in custody. In custody is not convicted. Fridayโs 16 charged in illegal-voting cases already ran as the Justice Department docket. This is the unused DHS name. We will not smash them into one count.
What this means for you
