The 35% ballot already ran. The Manhattan complaint already ran. This one is a rulebook.
U.S. EPA, Sept. 14, Houston, G20 Energy Abundance Ministerial: Administrator Lee Zeldin announced a final repeal of most of the Biden administrationโs 2024 Carbon Pollution Standards for fossil-fuel power plants. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and National Energy Dominance Council director Jarrod Agen stood with him. EPAโs projection: $310 billion in savings. That is the agencyโs number, not a court finding.
What the final rule repeals, per EPAโs preamble: emission guidelines for existing fossil steam units; CCS-based standards for coal units making a large modification; and the Phase 2 CCS standards for new base-load combustion turbines. NBC News: the 2024 rule would have required plants to capture at least 90% of carbon pollution, phased in during the 2030s.
Separately, EPA proposed rescinding all remaining greenhouse-gas standards for the power sector. EPA: if finalized, that proposal would save about $370 million more in direct compliance costs. NPR: Zeldin said โall of them.โ A proposal still needs comment. It is not the final repeal.
What this means for you
If you needed 44โ37, that was last night. If you needed a judge, this file does not have one. If you pay a power bill, $310 billion is EPAโs claim, not your statement.
Bottom line: 2024 rule mostly repealed. $310 billion is a projection. The rest is still a proposal.
