Pack the cooler. Then look at the pump.
GasBuddy says Americans will pay at least $4.03 a gallon this Labor Day, versus $3.16 a year ago. That would beat the old holiday record of $3.83 from 2012.
AAA said diesel hit $5.8500 on Friday, above the $5.816 peak from June 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine. Diesel is up more than 60% this year. On AAAโs data back to 2000, that is the worst annual jump on record.
That is the country, not a coastal complaint.
Why the pump will not drop this weekend
The Strait of Hormuz is still a trickle. We told you the transit count. Crude around $95 is the translation. Refineries outside the U.S. are short. U.S. plants are already running hard. You cannot pour Venezuelan crude into a Civic.
Vice President JD Vance was asked when prices go back to $3. He would not set a date.
The White House has pulled the levers it has: refiners in the room, a Venezuela oil deal, more strikes after Iran hit tankers, an earlier Strategic Petroleum Reserve dump that left the reserve as empty as the early 1980s.
Rystad Energy says Venezuelaโs output might double to 2.3 million barrels a day โ in 2035. That does not help Mondayโs drive to the lake.
Brown Universityโs Climate Solutions Lab put the extra gas-and-diesel bill since the Iran war at $97 billion, more than $740 per U.S. household.
Inflation-adjusted, 2008 was still worse โ about $5.63 in 2026 dollars. Nobody adjusts for inflation with the nozzle in their hand.
Diesel is the quiet one
Gasoline is what you screenshot. Diesel moves the trucks, tractors, trains, boats, and job sites. When diesel sets a record, the grocery receipt and the Amazon box catch up later. Airlines already hiked fares and bag fees and cut thin routes on jet fuel.
GasBuddyโs Patrick De Haan said the pain has lingered six months, unlike the 2022 spike, and there is no schedule for relief.
What this means for you
If you are driving this weekend, budget the tank before you budget the ribs. If you run a shop that gets inventory on a truck, this is a cost, not a vibe.
Bottom line: the holiday record is real. Diesel made a new all-time high today. The war is in the price. A speech will not knock a dime off it tonight.
