The Midwest just told Washington no.
The Missouri Supreme Court ruled unanimously Thursday that the 2025 congressional map — the one drawn after President Trump leaned on Republican states to redo House lines mid-decade — cannot be used in the November midterms, or any later election, until Missouri voters approve it.
The 2020-census map is back in force. Ballots are about to be printed. That is the whole fight in one paragraph.
What the court actually said
Opponents collected more than 300,000 signatures to put the map on the ballot. Secretary of State Denny Hoskins sat on the petition, then rejected it as legally insufficient on August 4 — primary day.
The court said the petition was legal, sufficient, and timely. Hoskins was wrong. The Missouri Constitution lets people do this. “No exception applies.”
Five of the seven justices were appointed by Republicans. This was not a blue-state stunt.
Attorney General Catherine Hanaway called it a “full-fledged constitutional crisis” and said she will take it to the U.S. Supreme Court. Trump posted that the ruling was “horrible, ridiculous, and unConstitutional” and that the old map is “Ancient History.”
The group that ran the petition, People Not Politicians, said the simpler thing: Missourians get a vote on a rigged map.
Why Kansas City is the tell
The map was built to squeeze out an extra Republican House seat. The district that mattered most is the 5th, held by Democrat Emanuel Cleaver in Kansas City. The new lines were drawn to make that seat winnable for the other party.
Trump started this mid-decade wave in Texas. About ten states followed. Most maps leaned Republican. California went the other way. Missouri is one of the few state courts that told the project to wait.
What this means for you
If you live in Missouri, your November House ballot may not match the primary you already voted in. That is messy. It is also the point of a referendum: the map does not get to skip the people.
If you do not live in Missouri, watch the appeal. A House majority this thin treats one Kansas City district like a national asset.
Bottom line: the map is parked until voters say otherwise. November is in two months. The printer does not care about the appeal.
