Public charge already ran. Steiner already ran. Annihilate already ran. This is a call, not a treaty.
Reuters, Raul Cortes and Aida Pelaez-Fernandez, Mexico City, Sept. 18, 2:39 p.m. UTC: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Friday her government is doing everything it can, “within the framework of sovereignty, respect, and what is best for Mexico, to reach a deal soon.” Wednesday’s call with President Donald Trump was “very good,” she said, and some agreements were reached. She did not provide details. “Progress is being made toward a potential deal,” she said at her daily news conference. Progress is not a signature. A potential deal is not a deal.
Washington and Mexico City are racing toward a bilateral trade accord before the November 3 U.S. midterms, Reuters said. There is no formal deadline. Officials in both capitals see political benefit if Trump’s party is at risk of losing Congress. U.S.–Canada talks collapsed last month and turned into a tariff fight. That collapse is not this file’s pact.
Sheinbaum: Mexico will seek a reduction in U.S. tariffs on Mexican steel, aluminum, and cars. AFP via RTHK: she has talked to Trump 22 times since taking office; most Mexican goods have been relatively spared, but he has imposed 50-percent levies on Mexican aluminum and steel and targeted autos. “We hope to reach an agreement” on “at least a reduction in the tariffs we currently have,” she said. A hope is not a cut. Al Jazeera: Thursday Trump said he could end trade relations with Mexico and European countries after the Fed hike. A threat is not a walk-away today.
We will not type a signed USMCA rewrite. We will not invent the next round’s dates. Steiner, public charge, and the Saudi nuclear resolution already ran.
What this means for you
If you needed a finished trade deal, wait for a text. If you needed Friday’s words, they are progress and steel, aluminum, cars. Not investment advice.
Bottom line: Progress. Not a pact. Steel, aluminum, cars. Nov. 3 is the politics, not a deadline.
