U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Saudi Arabia, Sept. 16: Level 3: Reconsider travel to Saudi Arabia because of the risk of Iranian drone and missile targeting of American interests, armed conflict, terrorism, exit bans, and local laws on social media. NBC, same morning: the United States upgraded the advisory to Level 3 and banned government employees from travel near the Yemen border. An upgrade is a product. It is not a vote for troops.
Do not travel to the Yemen border โ Level 4 โ because of terrorism. Armed groups in Yemen have attacked Saudi border towns with drones, missiles, and rockets. U.S. government employees in the kingdom may not travel within 20 miles of that border. They may not make non-essential trips to Qatif. They need special authorization for Jizan, Asir, Najran, and Qatif. The embassy: the U.S. government has limited ability to offer emergency services in those areas.
The same notice: Iran-backed Houthi rebels have threatened to attack Saudi Arabia again. Falling debris from intercepted drones and missiles is a risk, especially near energy infrastructure and military bases and closer to Yemen. Hostilities with Iran are dated from February 28, 2026. Commercial flights are operating, the embassy said, though they have been disrupted at times. Yemen itself remains do not travel. The embassy in Sanaa has been suspended since February 2015.
A Level 3 is not Level 4 for the whole kingdom. It is not al-Malkiโs red line. It is not CLARITY 49โ50. Enroll in STEP if you are there. We will not invent an evacuation.
What this means for you
If you hold a U.S. passport and had a ticket, reconsider is the word on the page. If you needed to drive the Yemen line, do not. If you needed troops, this file does not order them. If the map sits too heavy, 988.
