CENTCOM did the math in public.
After Iranโs Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired ballistic missiles at two U.S. Navy ships โ an aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer โ American forces struck three Iranian crude carriers on Saturday. The warships evaded the shots. No U.S. personnel were harmed.
The bill: M/T Downy, permanently disabled off Kharg Island, Iranโs main export dock. M/T Stark 1, permanently disabled near Jask, on the Hormuz approach. M/T Kylo, also called Noxen, empty, destroyed in the Gulf of Oman after the crew was told to abandon ship. CENTCOM released video. Iranian state media said a tanker near Kharg took four projectiles and reported no casualties.
Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander: โIf you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost โ taking out three of yours.โ He added the United States will, โif necessary, destroy Iranโs limited and exposed oil fleet.โ
Why these three ships
CENTCOM called them part of a multibillion-dollar shadow network that funds the IRGC and its proxies. Kharg still handles most of what Iran can load. Hitting hulls there is a cut in cash flow, not a speech.
Tasnim reported the Kharg hit first. Official Tehran has been quieter than the American statement. The AP called it a dangerous step: Iran had been shooting at commercial traffic. Saturdayโs U.S. reply was oil hulls, after missiles at Navy hulls.
What this means for you
If you drive, this is the weekend event that can show up at the pump after Labor Day. If you watch oil, $96 Brent already had Hormuz in it. If you watch the war, Cooper just said the fleet is on the menu.
Bottom line: two ships shot at, zero Americans hurt, three tankers taken. The next number is Tuesdayโs open.
