The Pentagon named Iran. This microphone named plants.
Reuters, Sept. 12: President Donald Trump, on Fox News’s The Ingraham Angle Friday, said he would not oppose Chinese automakers building cars in the United States. Quote: “If China wanted to come in and open a plant to build their cars here, I’d be okay with that.” “Japan does it, but they hire our people. The big thing is they hire our people.” He does not want Chinese automakers to build in Mexico and ship into the U.S. “I’m not knocking Chinese cars.”
He is due to meet China’s Xi Jinping in Washington in two weeks. U.S. automakers have urged him not to open the market. Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), Wednesday: rumors he would let Chinese cars be sold here as part of a larger deal would be “a strategic mistake.” Trump called that a “total phony rumor” and said he had kept Chinese vehicles out. A 2025 Biden-era rule effectively bars Chinese automakers from selling or building passenger vehicles here. Washington also keeps more than 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation — GM, Ford, Toyota, VW, Hyundai, Honda, Stellantis — wants Congress to pass a permanent bar by the end of December.
A plant quote is not a statute. A two-week summit is not a signature.
What this means for you
If you build cars in Michigan, this is a microphone, not a plant permit. If you needed Iran, that was last night. If you needed a deal with Xi, wait for text.
Bottom line: He’d take a U.S. plant. Not Mexico. Not a law. Xi is in two weeks.
