Putin asked them to thank Donald Trump, called the situation โdifficult,โ and said contacts of this kind are โalways beneficial.โ Witkoff said Trump sent his best wishes, thanked Putin for a Gilman family return, and thanked him for the no-shoot window that let the plane land.
Putinโs version of the pause: the request came through intelligence channels and the Foreign Ministry. He issued the order. โSince midnight on September 5, these strikes on Kiev have not been carried out.โ He said Ukraine had already cut strikes on Russia, including Moscow, โby an order of magnitude.โ A broader three-day truce? Ukraine published a call. โWe have never agreed on this with them.โ He will still โdo everything in our powerโ to keep the mediators safe.
What is still missing
Trump said Friday the envoys were bringing โa proposal to end the war.โ Dmitry Peskov said Saturday there is โno talk of new ideas.โ The published greeting does not pick a winner. It does confirm Kyiv on Sunday is still the plan.
