The train ride got a press conference.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday’s talks with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner ran three rounds and were “very substantive.” Round three brought in national security advisers from Britain, France, and Germany. Witkoff, after: “meaningful… important… we are very encouraged.” Kushner: they learned a lot and want the trilateral format they tried about six months ago — all three sides in one room.
The headline Zelenskyy wanted in the room is a winter package: air defense, energy support, and “a serious volume” of American LNG if the war is still on when the temperature drops. He said he discussed it “in absolute detail” with Steve, Jared, and the Europeans. Russia has already knocked out about 9 gigawatts of Ukrainian generation in earlier campaigns.
What is still not a deal
Zelenskyy credited the envoys with restarting talks after months of stall. He also said territorial questions are for leaders, not this table. “Plan A” is de-escalation. “Plan B” is defense: 67 Ukrainian companies already working on shooting down jet drones at scale, three to five with results. Next meeting: Ukraine, Europe, and the U.S., venue unpicked — “Europe, the U.S., or perhaps Ukraine again.”
The capitals are still on a 72-hour mute through Monday. The front is not. Ukraine said 108 drones and missiles overnight; 82 drones intercepted. One dead in Zaporizhzhia, a 74-year-old. Belgorod reported a Ukrainian drone on a car.
What this means for you
If you wanted a ceasefire, you still have two quiet capitals and a loud map. If you trade energy, LNG for Kyiv is a winter bid, not a Tuesday print. If you only read one word, it is encouraging — which is not signed.
Bottom line: a winter list, a trilateral hope, no breakthrough. They did not come for nothing, Zelenskyy said. They also did not leave with a peace.
