Associated Press Top 25, via NCAA.com, Stan Becton, Sept. 13: Texas is No. 1 — 1,678 points, 56 first-place votes, 2–0, up from 4. Georgia 2 (1,551, three firsts). Notre Dame 3 (1,531, one). Indiana 4 (1,466, three). Miami (FL) 5 (1,452, four). Ohio State 6 (1,407), was 1, record 1–1. LSU 7. Ole Miss 8. Texas A&M 9. Alabama 10 (1,068), was 12.

The drops: Oregon 21, was 6, down 15 after 39–31 at Oklahoma State. Oklahoma 24, was 11, down 13 after 17–10 at Michigan. Michigan returns at 19 (unranked last week). Iowa 18 after 16–13. First team out: Washington 172 points.
