The holiday weekend started with a jobs number and a red close. Here is the Saturday board.
Ten facts
- Payrolls: +162,000 in August. Unemployment 4.1%. June and July revised up 55,000 combined.
- Stocks: Dow 53,413.60 (β0.5%). S&P 7,718.41 (β0.4%). Nasdaq 26,506.99 (β0.3%). Week: flat. Monday: closed.
- Fed: hike odds 58.4%, up from 49.4%. Trump: cut, or he stops trade with deficit countries.
- Crypto: Bitcoin lost $80,000 on the print. That trade still stands.
- Mail ballots: Judge Talwani issued a preliminary injunction. Stronger than the TRO. Carolina already mailed.
- Football: LSU did not add Wright and Harris. Clemson at 6:30 ABC. Ohio State and Alabama open the afternoon.
- Moscow: Witkoff and Kushner this weekend, Kyiv Sunday. Russia hit the SBU Friday.
- Vienna: U.S. and E3 drafted an IAEA referral of Iran to the Security Council. Vote window Sept. 7β11.
- Weather: Lowell still a major hurricane; Hawaii is in an emergency. Marie is a California swell. Ross Fire still 38% contained.
- Prices: record Labor Day gas. Diesel all-time high. CPI: Friday, September 11. FOMC 15β16.
What this means for you
If you are grilling, the pump already billed you. If you are watching LSU, the lawsuit is the pregame show. If you trade, you have no tape until Tuesday and one inflation print before the Fed.
Bottom line: the print is in. The weekend is football and hurricanes. The year still turns on CPI.
