Four clocks sat on the same desk. Only one is allowed to say βclose.β
1:13 p.m. ET was a live cash tape. We typed Dow 52,648.77. Traders still had almost three hours. They used them: 52,573.29. Up on the day. Down from noon. Both can be true.
4:00 p.m. ET is the cash close. AP / Yahoo. Four-day losing streak over. Week still β1.6% on the Dow. That is the grade. Not 1:13. Not this morningβs 52,374 futures last.
CPI already printed: +0.4% / +3.4%, core +0.3% / +2.4%. PPI was yesterday. CME FedWatch near 90% for a hike is a futures market. FOMC Sept. 15β16, Chair Kevin Warsh, twelve votes. Brent $104.61 settle is oil, not the S&P. Salalah Monday is a reported meeting. Reuters has not verified it. Seven Hormuz ships is a count. It is not 125.
What this means for you
If you heard 52,649 at lunch, you heard a draft. If you heard 90%, you heard odds. If you needed the Fed, wait until Wednesday. If you needed a deal, wait for text.
Bottom line: Close is 52,573. Tape was 52,649. A hike is still a meeting.
