The flash cards just got used.
Tropical storm watch: conditions possible. Textbook window: 48 hours. This morningโs Oahu watch was already tighter โ 12โ24 hours โ because Lowell was closer and faster.
Tropical storm warning: conditions expected. Usual window: 36 hours. The 8 a.m. HST package put Oahu on a warning and wrote within 12 hours. Expected this afternoon or evening.
Same storm. Three hours. Two products. That is what an eastward nudge plus a Hurricane Hunter fix looks like on paper. The aircraft put the center at 325 miles from Lihue. The 5 a.m. pack had 375. Fifteen miles an hour toward the islands. Hurricane-force winds still reach 60 miles from the eye. You do not need landfall on Waikiki to get 39โ73 mph and a flood watch.
Kauai is a different card: hurricane warning. That is 74 mph+ expected. Do not mix the two islands in a group chat and call it one forecast.
High surf warning is a third card. Wind is the tree. Surf is the road. You can nail the shutters and still lose Lawai Road.
When the language jumps twice before noon, the action is: water, meds, documents, stay inside, stay off the coast. The cone argument is for people who are not in the warning.
What this means for you
If you are on Oahu, the warning is the last boring hour. If you are on Kauai, you already had the higher word. If you are reading from the mainland, โthey upgraded Honoluluโ is the sentence, not โit might miss.โ
Bottom line: watch was possible. Warning is expected. Oahu got both before lunch. Act on the second one.
