The convention raised hands. The prosecutor raised a white flag.
Reuters, Sept. 10: Joseph diGenova told the wire Thursday he has resigned as the prosecutor overseeing a wide-ranging Justice Department probe into past investigations of President Donald Trump. ABC News first reported it. Quote: “It was an honor and privilege to serve the president and the department.” He declined to elaborate. DOJ did not immediately comment.
He is a Trump ally, a former U.S. attorney in Washington under Reagan. He joined the department in April after a career prosecutor was removed. The Florida-based investigation has looked at the 2017 intelligence finding on Russia and 2016, and at former Special Counsel Jack Smith’s files on Mar-a-Lago documents and 2020. Reuters: investigators have interviewed current and former intelligence employees and recently sought to question FBI officials from the 2022 Mar-a-Lago search.
No criminal charges from this investigation. Some allies hoped it would reach Smith, former CIA Director John Brennan, former FBI Director James Comey — Comey already faces other Trump-administration charges. Brennan has denied wrongdoing; his lawyers sued to preserve documents. Legal experts, Reuters notes, have questioned a Florida venue. A resignation is not a finding that anyone was framed. It is not a finding that anyone committed a crime.
What this means for you
If you wanted a courtroom, this file still has none. If you wanted Dallas, that was the other story. If you needed a conviction, look at Conti last night, not this memo.
Bottom line: He quit. The probe has no charges. We will not invent one.
