The hurricane leftover is 460 miles out. The other map is 55 days.
Republicans opened the first midterm convention in party history Wednesday in Dallas, at the American Airlines Center. President Donald Trump is the product. RNC Chair Joe Gruters, to Fox News Digital on the eve: “We are putting the president on the ballot. That’s exactly what we’re doing with this midterm convention.” He called Trump “the best vote getter for these little propensity voters” and “the best showman in politics.” Midterms without his name on the line are the turnout problem the room is built to fix.
Speakers list, first to Fox: Trump delivers Wednesday’s keynote, tentatively 9 p.m. ET. He returns Thursday after Vice President JD Vance keys the second night. Gruters: you defy history by doing something different. He also said some candidates in tight races are staying home, and that toss-up names are still on the speaker list. We are not typing a roll call we do not have.
DNC Chair Ken Martin, convention-eve statement: working families are struggling “in Donald Trump’s economy” while Republicans throw “a multi-million dollar party to celebrate Trump’s failing presidency.” The DNC skipped a matching show and is in debt. Democrats want Dallas to be the clip. Republicans want it to be the turnout machine.
This desk already told you Nov. 3, Reuters/Ipsos approval at 33%, and MAGA Inc.’s cash. This post is the calendar click: the pep rally started. Fox’s own frame is inflation, gas, and an unpopular Iran war as the headwind. We are not inventing a new poll this afternoon. We are not inventing tonight’s speech before 9.
What this means for you
If you vote in November, this is the GOP’s bet that a two-day Trump show beats a quiet midterm. If you wanted a policy paper, wait for the transcript. If you wanted Hawaii weather, that already had its slot.
Bottom line: Dallas is open. Keynote 9 p.m. ET. 55 days. The president is the ballot they are printing.
