The intel five already ran. This is a listing channel and a perps book.
U.S. Attorney, Southern District of New York / CoinDesk, Olivier Acuna, Sept. 16: Hefu Chai, 36, and Huaisong โJerryโ Xiang, 30, former Robinhood engineers, were charged with commodities fraud and wire fraud. U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald: they allegedly misappropriated confidential listing information and traded Hyperliquid perpetual futures for personal benefit. Each allegedly profited more than $50,000 between 2025 and 2026. More than $50,000 is the allegation. It is not a restitution order.
Complaints, FBI Special Agent Joseph Kim, justice.gov: Chai was a technical lead on Robinhood Crypto listings from about 2021 to May 2026. Xiang was a software engineer on listings from about 2024 to September 2026, based in the Manhattan office. Both were โCoin Aware Individualsโ with access to a private Slack channel on listing dates. Robinhood policy: those employees were โstrictly prohibitedโ from trading on Robinhood or any other platform before a public listing or delisting announcement and for 24 hours after. Chai allegedly bought longs ahead of at least 10 announcements. Xiang ahead of at least 11.
Commodities fraud under the Commodity Exchange Act: maximum 10 years if convicted. Wire fraud, 18 U.S.C. ยง 1343: maximum 20 years if convicted. CoinDesk summarized 10 years; the complaints charge both counts. A maximum is a ceiling. It is not a sentence.
Robinhood, in a statement to CoinDesk: it investigated, reported the matter to law enforcement and regulators, and will cooperate. James C. Barnacle Jr., FBI assistant director in charge, named both men on the commodities-fraud and wire-fraud charges. Defendants are presumed innocent. We will not invent a plea.
What this means for you
If you needed two convictions, you do not have them. If you needed Hyperliquid itself charged, it is not, on this paper. If you needed $50,000 proven, wait for a finder of fact. Not investment advice.
Bottom line: Two charged. $50,000+ each alleged. 10 listings and 11 listings alleged. Charges, not convictions.
