Friday’s ‘cleared’ already ran. Friday’s Mayyun claim already ran. This is Saturday’s unused walk-back.
AFP, Saturday, via The New Arab: Yemeni military sources said government forces were advancing against the Houthis around the Bab al-Mandab Strait but have not yet secured control of the waterway. Sources from the internationally recognised government’s military also said Mayun Island, in the heart of the strait, remained in Houthi hands as fighting continued. The Houthis confirmed an attack in the area and claimed they had repelled it. Spokesman Yahya Saree, on Telegram: they succeeded in “driving back the Saudi-aligned troop concentrations that attempted to advance from the direction of Lahj towards Bab al-Mandeb.” Advancing is not control. A Houthi “repelled” is not a hold this desk verified.
Same AFP file: military sources from both sides said clashes around the strait had killed at least 63 people in the past 24 hours — 35 government forces and 28 Houthis. AFP: those claims have been impossible to independently verify. 63 is not a UN tally. Early Saturday the Saudi-led coalition said it destroyed more than 130 Houthi targets in a “large-scale operation.” That is their count. Al-Masirah reported strikes on the Bab area and four Saudi strikes on Sanaa’s airport on Saturday, a day after saying two were killed in a Friday airport strike. Riyadh said Friday that attacks on the Saudi capital’s airport had killed three people the previous day. UN data in the same file: more than 200,000 displaced since July. Anadolu, separately Saturday: the Giants Brigades said they thwarted a Houthi attack north of Dhubab Airport, “heavy losses,” no details. The Houthis did not immediately comment on that X post. Monday’s Dhubab claimed-and-denied already ran. We will not reprint it as first-day news.
What this means for you
If you needed Friday’s unused international, it still stands as an envoy’s ‘cleared’ and a Mayyun claim with fighting still described as fierce. If you needed this morning’s unused sentence, it is not secured, Mayun still Houthi, 63 unverified. If you needed independently verified control of the strait, wait.
Bottom line: Advancing, they said. Not secured. Mayun still Houthi, they said. Not Friday reprinted. Not verified.
