Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the second movie in history to clear $900 million domestic, and the fastest โ 36 days, versus 50 for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Through Thursday it sat at $899.7 million. The sixth Friday put the running total at about $903.7 million. Labor Day weekend estimates are around $22 million. Industry tracking has it near $922 million by Monday, $14 million shy of Force Awakensโ $936.6 million all-time domestic record, unadjusted.
Sony/Marvel. Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink. Destin Daniel Cretton directed. Opening weekend was an all-time domestic record $360 million. Fastest to $500 million in seven days. It passed Avengers: Endgameโs $858.3 million to become the biggest Marvel title in North America. It opened only $3 million ahead of Endgame and is now tens of millions in front at the same point in the run.
The summer around it
Domestic summer is landing near $4.7 billion, just under 2013โs $4.75 billion record. Brand New Day held No. 1 almost every day in August. Next weekend is the one that can put a comic-book movie on top of a galaxy far, far away.
What this means for you
If you already saw it, the holiday is the last cheap excuse for the people who said they would. If you care whether theaters still work, $900 million in five weeks is the sentence. If you trade Disney vs Sony, this is Sonyโs year on the domestic chart.
Bottom line: $900 million, 36 days, one record left. Labor Day is the on-ramp, not the finish.
