Warner Bros. wanted a tax write-off. Audiences wanted the coyote.
Coyote vs. Acme, now out through Ketchup Entertainment, is tracking about $15.3 million over the four-day Labor Day frame, a 27% drop from opening weekend. Domestic total: about $37.8 million. Ketchupโs buy-and-market number has been reported near $60 million. Foreign presales plus this hold are how a rescued cartoon gets to even.
Will Forte, Lana Condor, John Cena. The story everyone tells in the lobby is that the movie almost never came out. That sentence is selling tickets.
The rest of the holiday board
Spider-Man: Brand New Day still owns No. 1 at about $22 million. The Odyssey is in a photo finish for No. 2, adding about $16 million and steaming toward $600 million domestic. Buddy, the Roadside/Saban horror-comedy, is tracking $5.4 million over three days โ a 2% drop โ toward $15 million. The Dog Stars, Ridley Scott, 20th Century: about $3.5 million over four days, โ64%, $13.8 million total, against a budget that Puck put at $89 million, not the official $70 million.
What this means for you
If you have kids and one holiday screen, the rescued rabbit-and-coyote movie is the one with legs. If you work in this town, a 27% hold is the argument against shelving finished films. If you only see Spider-Man, the No. 2 race is the interesting one.
Bottom line: the write-off became a word-of-mouth hold. That is the rare studio story that ends in a laugh.
