Bitcoin spent Thursday punching through $80,000 and tagging $81,000 while $415 million in shorts got liquidated. Friday morning it was a little softer — Bloomberg had it off about 0.4% around $81,132 — and still pointed at a third straight green week.
That is the whole setup. The squeeze happened. The week is almost in the bag. 8:30 a.m. Eastern can still dump it out of the bag.
Where the other coins sat
Ether was +0.6% in that same wrap, toward the highest in about seven months. XRP had already done a 6% Thursday. Alts followed the bitcoin squeeze like they always do, then waited.
U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs flipped to about $101 million in on Wednesday after $236 million out on Tuesday. Ethereum spot ETFs did the opposite: about $48 million out after a long inflow streak. Price can rip while the fund is leaking. Yesterday, bitcoin’s funds cooperated. Ether’s did not.
Why payrolls matter more than Iran-talk this morning
Yesterday we told you BTC was mixing Trump’s war-over chatter with Waller’s pause. Overnight, the war did not close and the Fed did not meet. The next scheduled shock is August nonfarm payrolls.
Crypto’s cheat sheet is the same as equities:
- Soft jobs, cooler wages → the squeeze gets to keep $80k
- Hot jobs or hot wages → hike odds back up, $80k becomes a round-trip
- Messy mixed print → the same 100,000-liquidations crowd tries the other direction
$83,000 is still the ceiling a lot of desks marked as the trap. A weekly close above $80k is the first honest step. A weekly close because shorts had to buy is a footnote.
What this means for you
Do not confuse a green week with a new cycle. The ETF era still needs net inflows more than one Wednesday. If you bought the squeeze, 8:30 is when you find out whether anyone else wanted the coins.
Bottom line: $81,000 is a level. Payrolls are a test. The week only counts if it survives the number.
