Saturday’s unused Noble already ran. This is Tuesday’s unused charging paper. An indictment is not a conviction.
Department of Justice, Tuesday: Mael Chemla, 61, a U.S., French, and Israeli national previously residing in Aventura, Florida, was extradited from Germany and made his initial appearance in Miami federal court yesterday. DOJ: the indictment was unsealed yesterday. He is charged with conspiracy, mail fraud, and wire fraud. Those are charges. They are not findings. All defendants presumed innocent. Saturday already filed unused Noble. We will not reprint a Richmond-area owner as first-day news. We will not reprint Friday’s unused Ashbacher. We will not reprint Thursday’s unused Ghostbusters five. We will not reprint Wednesday’s unused Faruqui. We will not reprint Monday’s unused 48. We will not reprint Sunday’s unused Lucas.
Same unused indictment, according to DOJ: Chemla allegedly conspired with others to send letters that looked like personalized notes from psychics. The letters, DOJ said, told victims a psychic had learned of an imminent financial windfall and that the victim had to send a payment to receive it. DOJ: he opened U.S. bank accounts in the names of the purported psychics, deposited victims’ checks, then wired the funds to European accounts controlled by a co-conspirator. From September 2016 through November 2020, Chemla and his co-conspirator collected more than $4 million from thousands of victims in the United States, many of them elderly and otherwise vulnerable. If convicted, DOJ said, he faces a maximum of 20 years on all counts. If convicted is not convicted. Those are allegations in a charging paper. They are not a verdict. U.S. Postal Inspection Service is investigating. Trial Attorneys Ann Entwistle and Charles Dunn of the Criminal Division’s White Collar and Corporate Enforcement Section are prosecuting. DOJ’s Office of International Affairs handled the German extradition court, then coordinated with the U.S. Marshals for transport.
Same unused caution: Monday leftover 63 people charged in election-related cases is not this unused Miami extradition. We will not dump a 63-name board as noon crime. 63 is not Monday’s unused 48 reprinted. Do not smash 63 into 48. Leftover ICE Houston paper is Harris County state process. It is not this unused federal Miami file. Oct. 23 leftover Brinksman is not this unused Chemla paper. We will not smash two contractors into one psychic-mail allegation. We will not invent a conviction. Nov. 3 is the election. A charging paper is not a House or Senate tally. A speech is not a result. Charges are not convictions.
What this means for you
If you needed Saturday’s unused crime, it still stands as a Richmond-area owner charged, not convicted. If you needed this noon’s unused paper, it is an Aventura man extradited and charged, not convicted. If the week is too heavy, 988.
Bottom line: Charged. Not convicted. Not Noble reprinted. Not 63 dumped.
