The holiday ended. The islands did not reopen.
Gov. Josh Green closed state and county offices and the judiciary on Oahu and in Kauai County for Tuesday. The Department of Education shut all public schools on Oahu and Kauai, plus Niihau High and Elementary. University of Hawaiสปi campuses on Oahu and Kauai Community College are dark. Kamehameha closed Kapฤlama, plus Oahu and Kauai preschools and offices. Honolulu shut city offices and non-essential services. Call 768-CITY.
HDOT closed Lihue Airport at 2:30 p.m. Monday. Commercial ports went with it. Alaska and Hawaiian gave fee-free changes through Tuesday. Southwest posted an advisory. Do not show up at LIH because a group chat said it โmightโ open. Check the airline.
Honolulu opened a pet-friendly shelter at Nฤnฤkuli Elementary as a precaution. Kauaiโs five last-resort sites were already on the board: Kฤซlauea Neighborhood Center, Kapaสปa Middle, Kauaสปi High gym, Kalฤheo Neighborhood Center, Waimea Canyon Middle.
Civil Beat noted some Oahu schools have already eaten three cancelled days a month into the year after Lala and now Lowell. That is not a weather footnote. That is a kid who has not had a full week.
What this means for you
If you work for the state on Oahu or Kauai, you are off. If you have a child in those schools, you are the school. If you have a Lihue ticket, you have a waiver, not a seat, until the carrier says otherwise. Stay off the south-facing shore anyway.
Bottom line: Tuesday is closed on the two islands closest to the storm. The core moving away does not unlock the classroom.
