BBC / UPI, Friday: President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump hosted China’s Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan at a state dinner in the White House East Room. Trump toasted a future of “harmony, peace and success,” called the U.S.-China relationship “never better,” and gifted Xi a bald eagle statue he and Melania helped design. UPI named among the guests Elon Musk, Tim Cook, Sam Altman, and Jensen Huang. A guest list is not a chip deal.
BBC: Xi said the two countries “must act as responsible major countries,” and that they had agreed to build a “constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability.” He thanked his hosts for “meticulous care.” A toast is not a treaty. Friday’s unused itinerary: tea in the Red Room with the two couples, then a tour of the National Archives, then Xi leaves Washington. Evening already filed Ping Ping and Fu Shuang and 100,000 students. Midday already filed Jan. 10. We will not reprint those as first-day news, and we will not invent a Taiwan package or a rare-earth close that has not posted.
