AFP, published Sunday 06:53 UTC: the Saudi-led coalition said Saturday evening on X that a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis toward Riyadh was “successfully intercepted and destroyed.” AFP: it is the first time since Yemen’s civil war resumed that strikes have threatened the Saudi capital. AFP journalists in Riyadh heard two explosions Saturday and saw a fuel tank bearing the Aramco logo on fire near the airport. Fire seen is not a confirmed Aramco production outage. Residents received an alert just before 3:00 a.m. local: “The area is under a hostile aerial threat.” Civil defense lifted it about half an hour later. One resident: “I heard the alarm, then my windows shook.”
Yahya Saree, Houthi military spokesman, on Telegram: “two successful military operations” with ballistic and cruise missiles and drones — “sensitive sites” in Riyadh and “Aramco facilities in Yanbu.” The coalition said the group tried to target civilians and civilian infrastructure in several western cities, including Yanbu, and that those attacks were thwarted by air defenses. A Houthi success claim is not a confirmed strike. A thwarted line is not a miss we filmed.
U.S. State Department: the conflict “has the potential to escalate rapidly.” Americans outside the region should “seriously reconsider travel to and through the region.” Axios, cited by AFP: Washington last week refused a Saudi request to strike the Houthis. A refusal is not a treaty. $24.3 billion for 48 F-35s, State said Thursday, is a sale announcement, not airplanes delivered.
