Vladimir Putin turned the capital off for 72 hours. He did not turn the war off.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS on Saturday that Putin ordered no strikes on Kyiv for three days, starting midnight. Reason given: U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are supposed to fly to Kyiv on Sunday. Peskov confirmed they will meet Putin in Moscow. He also said there is βno talk of new ideasβ to end the war.
That is the greeting. Kirill Dmitriev met them at the airport under the caption βWelcome to Moscow Peacemakers.β
What happened while the pause was being announced
Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia struck Kyiv and Boryspil international airports overnight and tied it to a U.S. plane using Ukrainian airspace. βWe have taken note.β He said Ukraine will adjust operations over Russian airspace next week. He had already promised no Ukrainian strikes during the envoysβ Moscow stay.
Elsewhere Saturday: five workers killed at an industrial site in Dnipropetrovsk β a locksmith, electrician, plumber, machinist. Russia said it hit two metallurgical plants. A nine-story building in Boryspil district partially burned. Drones hit a mall in Mykolaiv. Ukraineβs air force counted 167 attack drones overnight, 128 downed. Russia said it shot down 53 Ukrainian drones. Three wounded in Belgorod, including a 14-year-old.
Fridayβs drone on the SBU headquarters still sits in the same 24 hours as βpeacemakers.β
What this means for you
We told you the envoys were coming. The new fact is a timed mute on one city so a plane can land. If Sunday happens, the pause did its job. If the rest of the map keeps burning, you know what kind of pause it was.
Bottom line: 72 hours on Kyiv. No new ideas, per Peskov. The airports already got the message.
