Darian Mensah threw five touchdown passes in his first game as a Hurricane. Malachi Toney caught 234 yards, a school record, passing Eddie Brownβs 220 against Boston College in 1984 β the Hail Flutie night. Final: Miami 45, Stanford 6.
The first two drives were touchdowns. Mensah to Toney, 23 yards, then 2 yards. Toney hit a Heisman pose for the orange-and-green pocket in that corner of the stadium. A 47-yarder in the third quarter is the catch that broke the record.
Davis Warren threw for 214 yards for Stanford and never got them in. The Cardinal had just beaten Hawaii 37β27 in Warrenβs debut. This was a different Saturday-night-before.
Miami is 1β0, 1β0 ACC. Mensah transferred in and needed one snap to look like the plan.
How it sits on the board
We already told you Ohio State and Alabama open this afternoon and LSU-Clemson is the night lawsuit game. Miami did the Friday West Coast slot and left no suspense. That is useful: the Hurricanes do not have to explain a sloppy opener on Sunday.
