No. 1 Ohio State hosts Ball State at 12:30 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network. That is a ranking, not a contest. No. 13 Alabama opens at home against East Carolina late morning Central β first meeting since a 23β22 Tide escape in 1998. Kalen DeBoer is year two after a playoff run that died in the Rose Bowl against eventual champion Indiana.
The afternoon window
No. 2 Oregon gets Boise State at 3:30 on CBS. No. 5 Texas hosts Texas State in the same window. No. 18 Penn State has Marshall. No. 20 Tennessee has Furman. Auburn vs. Baylor is in the Mercedes-Benz dome in Atlanta. No. 8 Texas A&M draws Missouri State in the evening on ESPN.
Most of those are September football: ranked teams, Group of Five or FCS guests, a chance to look at a quarterback before the real ones show up. Ohio Stateβs next interesting date is Texas on September 12.
The night game that is not a cupcake
LSU vs. Clemson, 6:30 p.m., ABC. We told you the injunction. We told you the SEC sued. We just told you Wright and Harris are not dressing. That is still the national game: two brands, a primetime window, and a docket number.
NFL Week 1 does not start until Wednesday in Seattle. Tonight belongs to campus.
What this means for you
If you only watch one, watch LSU-Clemson. If you are in Columbus or Tuscaloosa, enjoy the first home Saturday and do not confuse it for October.
Bottom line: the season is on. Most of the board is easy. The night game is the one with lawyers.
