Three pieces of paper get confused before breakfast.
A convention promise is what a candidate or a president says into a microphone to make a room cheer. Last night: $5,000, both chambers, branded a “Trump dividend.” No pay date. No income cap. No offset. Fox printed the quote. That is the speech.
A law is what the House and Senate pass and the president signs. Tax cuts, no tax on tips, a dividend, a rebate — those are statutes or they are slogans. “If we win” is a condition, not an enrollment form. Losing the majority, he said, kills the border and the tax cuts. That is a political if-then. It is not IRS.gov.
A data print is what BLS drops at 8:30. PPI is what producers got paid in August. It is not CPI. It is not the Fed. It is not $5,000. Kevin Warsh’s FOMC is next week. Oil at $103 is the overnight input into that print. It does not mail anyone a dividend either.
Shareholders get dividends because a board votes cash out of a company. Citizens get federal money because Congress writes a bill. Mixing the two is the metaphor. Keep the metaphor in Dallas.
What this means for you
If you heard $5,000 and opened a savings app, you heard a rally. If you vote in November, the real number is still Nov. 3. If you needed inflation, wait 20 minutes for PPI, then wait until Friday for CPI.
Bottom line: a speech, a statute, and a table. Only one of those happened overnight.
