Kauai County is no longer in the homework phase.
A tropical storm watch means those conditions are possible within 48 hours. That went up first. A tropical storm warning means they are expected within 36 hours. That is what Kauai and Niihau have tonight. A hurricane warning β posted for Papahanaumokuakea from Nihoa to French Frigate Shoals β is the same clock at a higher wind.
Saffir-Simpson is still only maximum sustained wind. Category 3 starts at 111 mph. Lowell is near 120. It can weaken and still throw 6β10 inches of rain, 14 isolated, south wind Hawaii is not built for, and 1β3 feet of surge in Kauai County. Iniki was a 4. Intensity is the engine. Track is the driveway.
What βexpected Monday afternoonβ means
The warning is the National Weather Service telling you to stop debating the cone. Finish water, meds, documents. KIUC already said the lights may go MondayβTuesday. Refuge sites are last-resort, not hotels. KEMA said stay home. That sentence is the warning in English.
Cone error on a 36-hour clock is smaller than day four and still not zero. Honolulu will not βdeclare this over.β Neither should a group chat.
What this means for you
If you live in Kauai County, the warning is permission to be boring. If you are watching from the mainland, do not confuse a Cat-3 headline with a landfall headline. Read the county text, not a cousin.
Bottom line: watch was 48 hours possible. Warning is 36 hours expected. Kauai has the second one. Act on it.
