U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Public Affairs, Tuesday Sept. 29: a federal grand jury in the Middle District of Florida charged Swapnadip Roy, 33, and Vicky Ramancha, 37, both Indian nationals, with conspiracy and smuggling in an alleged transnational counterfeit-prescription scheme. The indictment alleges they sold counterfeit Ozempic to U.S. distributors at deeply discounted prices. Roy was extradited from Italy and made his initial appearance in Tampa on Tuesday. That is the paper. An indictment is an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Same DOJ release: beginning in at least July 2023 and continuing to April 2024, they allegedly obtained counterfeit Ozempic from unauthorized sources in China, with counterfeit packaging, package inserts, pen labels, and needles. The scheme continued after the FDA seized some of the product in December 2023 and issued a public warning. Counts: one conspiracy to commit smuggling and to defraud the United States, three smuggling, two selling counterfeit drugs and holding them for sale. If convicted, each faces a maximum of 71 years. 71 is a ceiling. It is not a sentence. FDA OCI is investigating. Tuesday evening’s unused Bradley already ran. What this means for you
If you needed last night’s unused Florida sentence, it still stands as a plea and $18,264. If you needed this morning’s unused crime, it is Roy and Ramancha charged, not convicted. 71 is not time served.
