U.S. Attorney David Metcalf, Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Wednesday (Inquirer 1:15 p.m.; NBC / FOX 29): ten people charged in the Jones-Basley organization. Leaders named: Gregory “Smallz” Jones, 48, of Philadelphia, and Edward “Beeb” Basley, 47, of Wayne. All ten: conspiracy to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine. Jones and Basley also each face possession with intent to distribute five kilograms or more. Jones: an additional count of distributing near an elementary school. Basley: a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime. Metcalf: $5 to $10 million worth of cocaine onto Philadelphia streets every month, alleged. Alleged is not proven.
The Inquirer: Jones allegedly took bulk loads from a Mexico supplier delivered by tractor-trailer; in May, Tennessee Highway Patrol stopped a truck bound for Philadelphia with 89 kilograms. Driver named: Orenthial “D” Bailey, 50, one of the ten. FOX 29 / the news conference: five defendants arrested by the FBI in coordinated operations; five already in state or federal custody. Metcalf: the investigation is ongoing; more arrests to come. Coming is not a name we have. Almost all ten had prior federal cases, Metcalf said — Jones in 2009, Basley in 2007. A prior case is not this verdict.
What this means for you
If you needed last night’s wire-fraud complaint, it still stands. If you needed this morning’s unused crime, it is ten charged, $5–10 million a month alleged, 89 kilograms in May. Charges, not convictions.
Bottom line: Jones 48, Basley 47, eight more. Ten charged. Not Oxygen. Not a verdict.
