The Sox scored three in the first and three in the second against Randy Dobnak (3–5), who lasted 1 1/3, six runs (four earned), six hits, a wild pitch, and an error on a pickoff. Miguel Vargas had two hits and two RBI, including run-scoring singles in the first and second. Tristan Peters an RBI single in the first and an RBI forceout in the fourth. Andrew Benintendi also two RBI.
David Sandlin (3–2), a rookie right-hander, went six innings, one run, five hits, zero walks, seven strikeouts, 85 pitches. He worked around Bobby Witt Jr.’s one-out double in the first in 17 pitches. Kyle Teel a solo homer off Alex Lange to start the fourth. Salvador Perez led off the bottom of the fourth for Kansas City’s only run — his 20th homer, a sixth straight season at that mark. Chicago won the season series 9–4. The Sox moved a half-game behind Cleveland, which had not yet played in Boston when this box posted. We will not invent that score, and we will not invent Thursday night’s Yankees–Rays.
