The hearing already ran. The injunction ask already ran. This is Tuesday’s unused lunch.
CBS News, Joe Walsh, updated Tuesday 6:02 p.m. ET: President Trump and leaders of the country’s largest artificial-intelligence companies signed a set of voluntary safety standards after a lunch at the White House. Trump, flanked by SpaceX’s Elon Musk, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, OpenAI’s Greg Brockman, Google’s Sundar Pichai, and others, said, “It’s almost like a constitution, in a way.” Asked if the deal was binding, he said, “I think it’s morally binding.” He later said he was seeing “tremendous self-policing.” A moral line is not a statute we have.
Same CBS file: House Speaker Mike Johnson said the group signed an accord on “super intelligence” — Trump’s preferred term for AI — a “joint commitment” and “statement of principles” for “robust internal controls.” CBS, citing a one-page accord Trump posted to Truth Social: the companies committed to “four layers of controls and audits,” including internal evaluations, audits by an external firm, and reviews by each company’s board, and to “meet regularly” on standards. The accord said it “may make sense to codify these steps into laws or regulations” over time. May is not a bill. Trump said the leaders discussed a 10-person committee to “watch over the enterprise,” and he plans to name an “AI czar” in the next three or four days. A plan is not a name we have. CBS: he also signed an executive order Tuesday directing the federal government to use the term “Super Intelligence” instead of artificial intelligence. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va.: “The president’s response? To rename it and tell the companies developing it to regulate themselves.” Midday’s unused Smith testimony already ran. We will not reprint “I stand by” as first-day news, and we will not type a statute this board does not have.
What this means for you
If you needed this afternoon’s unused hearing, it still stands as testimony, not a verdict. If you needed tonight’s unused politics, it is a voluntary accord after lunch, not a law.
Bottom line: “Morally binding.” Not a statute. Not Smith reprinted.
