Tehran answered the tankers with a sentence.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker and a lead negotiator, said Sunday that “proportionate responses” to U.S. attacks are over. From now on, any violation of Iran’s interests gets a “faster, heavier, and more painful” reply. “The rules of the game have changed.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had already posted the American version: “If Iran shoots at U.S. ships, we will destroy (and sink) their oil tankers. All they have to do is not shoot at the Navy.”
That is the ledger after Saturday. CENTCOM disabled M/T Downy off Kharg and Stark 1 near Jask, and destroyed empty Kylo in the Gulf of Oman, after IRGC missiles at a carrier and a destroyer. The U.S. said both warships evaded. No Americans hurt.
What Iran also claimed this morning
The IRGC said Sunday it attacked a U.S. unmanned surface vessel trying to enter Hormuz, and that it had targeted tankers and U.S.-linked ships. State media also carried a claim that ballistic missiles struck a carrier and a destroyer and that both left the area. CENTCOM’s Saturday statement said the opposite: the ships evaded, nobody was harmed. We are not going to write a damaged carrier that Washington has not confirmed.
Ghalibaf, in the same breath, listed exchange-rate swings, inflation, unemployment, and market chaos as “fundamental challenges” on people’s livelihoods. World Bank: Iranian GDP −2.7% in the year to March, inflation 62.2% in February, food inflation 99%. An Iranian official has put war job losses at one million. Iran used to send 90% of its crude through Kharg.
What this means for you
If you drive, this is still a Tuesday oil story. If you watch the war, Sunday added a threat, not a verified second carrier hit. If you trade, the pit is closed until after Labor Day.
Bottom line: Tehran says the polite phase is done. Washington says stop shooting at the Navy. The ships from Saturday are still the only confirmed hulls.
