Local 10, Chris Gothner, Tuesday, 3:57 p.m., court documents: Shmueal Mauda, 36, a Miami Shores police detective also known as Sam Mauda, Elisha Mauda, 39, of Pembroke Pines, and Brent Small, 58, of Hollywood, face four federal counts: conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud, wire fraud, bank fraud, and aggravated identity theft. All three appeared in Fort Lauderdale federal court on Monday. A U.S. Secret Service special agent’s complaint alleges they stole identities of “elderly and deceased victims” nationwide — including seniors in their 90s — and funneled money to companies they controlled. The charges, withdrawals, and transfers add up to more than $1.6 million, authorities allege. A complaint is an accusation. All three are presumed innocent.
The complaint: the group opened credit cards in victims’ names or took over dormant accounts, mostly online, because victims “generally did not have online access.” One alleged use: a 97-year-old Iowan’s card for a $9,513 property-tax payment. Another: an 85-year-old Washington resident, $800,000 alleged from a Chase account. Shmueal Mauda is accused of using a dead victim’s card for a trip to Seoul. Elisha Mauda was stopped on the jet bridge at Fort Lauderdale after a one-way ticket to Bogotá, the complaint states. Miami Shores placed Shmueal Mauda on unpaid leave after the August arrest. Detention hearings are set for next Tuesday. Arraignment Oct. 5.
Attorneys Chris Cavallo and Jayne Weintraub, for Elisha Mauda: their client “maintains his innocence and looks forward to clearing his name in court.” Shmueal Mauda’s attorney did not comment by publication. We will not type a verdict.
