One island got the bell. The other got three more dark days.
Gov. Josh Green: state and county offices, public schools, University of Hawaiʻi, and the judiciary on Oahu reopen Wednesday, Sept. 9. Maui County and the Big Island reopen too, including the four West Maui schools shut Tuesday for Honoapiilani Highway. TheBus, Skyline, refuse, satellite city halls, most parks — back on the weekday clock, with detours where debris is still a fact.
Kauai County is the other sentence. State and county offices, Kauai Community College, all public schools on Kauai, and Niihau High and Elementary stay closed through Friday, Sept. 11. Judiciary on Kauai is still assessing. County parks, campgrounds, Wailua Golf Course, DLNR parks and forest reserves: closed until further notice. The Kauai Bus: suspended. Refuse collection: suspended. Kekaha Landfill: residents only, and only if the road is clear.
Green: “Conditions have improved enough for Oahu to fully reopen Wednesday, but Kauai continues to face significant impacts from Hurricane Lowell.” Reopening next week depends on power, roads, and whether the buildings are actually usable.
Kauai state employees keep administrative leave through Friday except disaster coordinators, response workers, hospitals, corrections, maintenance, and assigned remote staff. If you do not know which list you are on, call your supervisor — not a cousin.
What this means for you
If you are on Oahu, go to work and expect a detour. If you are on Kauai, stay off the roads unless you have to move. If you fly Lihue, the airline. If a line is down, it is live.
Bottom line: Oahu is open. Kauai is closed through Friday. The storm left. The split stayed.
