Reuters, aboard Air Force One, Sept. 13, posted 12:50 a.m. UTC Monday: President Donald Trump brushed aside a Wall Street Journal report that Iran acquired satellite images of a base in Jordan from Chinese entities before an attack that killed three U.S. troops there in July. Asked whether he would raise it with Chinese President Xi Jinping, he did not answer directly.
Quote: โThey basically do what we do.โ And: โWhen they say China spies on us, I say youโre right and we spy on them too.โ He said he thinks Xi has โbehaved reasonably well, and we behave reasonably well.โ The two are expected to meet in the United States on Sept. 24. Reuters: China has not officially confirmed that meeting.
Reuters could not immediately verify the Journal story. The paper, citing unnamed U.S. officials, did not identify the Chinese entities and did not allege direct involvement by Beijing. Monday in Beijing, foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun: China strictly fulfills its international obligations. โWe firmly oppose unfounded suspicions and accusations made without evidence.โ Reuters: at least 18 U.S. service personnel have been killed since the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran began at the end of February.
A presidentโs shrug is not an intelligence finding. A Sept. 24 calendar is not a confirmed bilateral.
