Sunday was supposed to be a plane. It was a train.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy began talks with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Kyiv — St. Sophia Square, first visit by Trump’s envoys since the full-scale war. “Negotiations have begun,” he posted. He also said Russia did not allow the delegation to arrive by air, “even though we have prepared everything and our airports are still operating today.” They were met at the central station by senior officials from the presidential office, intelligence, and the foreign ministry.
That is the pause, translated. Putin ordered no strikes on Kyiv from midnight Saturday so a plane could land. Overnight hits on Kyiv and Boryspil airports were already on the board. The Americans rode the rails.
What Moscow said after the greeting
Saturday in the Kremlin lasted three hours and 10 minutes, including a working dinner. Aide Yury Ushakov: the envoys “outlined a number of ideas” on a settlement. He did not name them. Talks went beyond Ukraine into “potential major, mutually beneficial Russian-American projects.” Overall: “timely and highly useful.” A White House official told Reuters the session was “substantive” and that next steps would be announced in the coming weeks.
Ushakov also said Putin stressed battlefield “successes,” “root causes,” and that the Americans would take those assessments to Kyiv. Peskov had said Saturday there was “no talk of new ideas.” Trump had said they were bringing a proposal. Both sentences are still on the table.
What this means for you
If you wanted a ceasefire, you still have a mute on two capitals and a no on a wider truce. If you wanted a deal, “coming weeks” is not a signing ceremony. If you wondered whether the pause was a runway, the train is the answer.
Bottom line: they are in Kyiv. They did not land. Useful is the Kremlin word. Weeks is the White House word.
